Join us as we head into the snow covered tundra for 5 days skiing in the wild borderland between Norway and Finland.
What to Expect
This Easter Gutsy Girls will be heading well above the arctic circle for an unforgettable 7 days skiing in Finland’s Käsivarsi wilderness. Starting our expedition in Northern Norway, we’ll cross the border to Finland’s most mountainous region and home to Haiti Fell - Finland’s highest peak.
Working with experienced and passionate guides, we’ll be cross country skiing on a route that’s challenging but achievable for complete beginners looking to push themselves on their first arctic expedition.
Over 5 days we’ll ski 110km, covering 15-20 km per day on varying landscapes with incredible vast views of the snow covered tundra. We’ll be disconnected from the outside world, spending 4 nights in wilderness huts and expedition tents.
Never cross country skied before? No problem. On our first day of skiing our expert coach and guide will help you develop all your required skills for the expedition, from moving effectively through the snow to pulling our pulkas filled with gear.
Our adventure will start in Kilpisjärvi, a tiny village in the north western arm of Finland, right on the border with Norway. With a population of around 150 people, this will be our first taste of the silence and wilderness of home for the week.
We will venture into Käsivarsi Wilderness Area, Finland’s second largest wilderness area. With Finland's highest fells, including Haiti Fell (Finland’s highest peak) which if conditions allow we’ll be aiming to ascent and descent during our week-long adventure.
The terrain is an open tundra. With changing conditions it’s a real adventure and with no roads it’s a truly beautiful and wild location. The Käsivarsi Wilderness area’s wildlife includes the Norwegian lemmings, gyrfalcon, snowy owl and arctic foxes!
Cross Country Skiing
We’ll be cross country skiing across the open tundra, on this self sufficient adventure we’ll be carrying all we need with us on our pulkas (sleds) which we pull behind us.
There’s no need for any previous cross country skiing experience; all we ask is you come with a good level of fitness and are up for a challenge!
On day one, we’ll get to grips with cross country skiing with expert coaching from our local guide. Cross country skiing offers a speedy progression, by the end of your first day you’ll feel confident and ready to tackle the 110km that lie ahead up!
We’ll be skiing between 15-20km per day, with plenty of breaks to enjoy the views and take photos!
