Fly into Kuusammo

Experience the untouched wilderness of Finland’s Hossa National Park on our active winter adventure holiday. This multi-activity journey offers the perfect introduction to the Finnish winter, with snowshoeing through serene forests, fat biking along snowy trails, and cross-country skiing across beautifully pristine landscapes.

You’ll also embark on an overnight expedition to a secluded off-grid cabin, where you can disconnect and soak in Finland’s winter magic. With minimal light pollution, this setting is ideal for gazing at the northern lights, casting their enchanting glow across the sky to complete the experience.

Each evening, unwind Finnish-style with nightly saunas and, for the adventurous, a refreshing ice bath in a frozen lake!

Designed with beginners in mind, this Finnish adventure is a chance to explore the snow, try new sports together, and make unforgettable memories in a winter wonderland.

Location

We’re heading to Hossa, Finland’s 40th National Park, an expansive wilderness spanning over 11,000 hectares of pristine forest and glistening lakes. This remarkable landscape is home to reindeer, elk, hares, and even wolves and wolverines—while bears, thankfully, are safely in hibernation during winter!

Rich with history, Hossa has been inhabited since the Stone Age, and some of Finland’s most treasured rock paintings are found at Värikallio, dating back over 4,000 years. With over 90 kilometres of trails, it’s the ideal base for a multi-activity winter adventure, offering plenty of ways to explore and connect with the stunning Finnish outdoors alongside new friends.

Activities

Snowshoeing

Love hiking? Snowshoeing is its winter counterpart, making snowy, remote terrain accessible and easy to explore. Snowshoes, worn over your boots, have a wide frame that distributes body weight over a larger surface area, preventing you from sinking into deep snow and allowing you to ‘float’ on top instead of wading through it.

It’s an ideal sport for beginners, requiring far less technical skill than alpine skiing or snowboarding, yet it still takes you out into the breathtaking, snowy backcountry.

On this adventure, we’ll enjoy three days of snowshoeing, including a memorable day trekking to a secluded wilderness cabin for an unforgettable night immersed in nature.

Cross Country Skiing

We’ll be dipping our toes into cross-country skiing on this adventure, spending two days learning the basics as we explore the stunning Finnish wilderness.

One of the oldest forms of skiing, cross-country skiing lets you glide over flat and rolling terrain, making it a gentle yet exhilarating way to move through snow-covered landscapes. Unlike downhill skiing, cross-country skiing is all about rhythm and flow, with the occasional gentle slope adding a bit of fun without the steep drops.

This classic Nordic activity gives you access to the untouched, remote areas that most travellers never see—no crowds, no lift lines—just you, the Gutsy Girls, and the pristine Finnish wilderness all around

Overnight Expedition

We’ll venture deep into the Finnish wilderness for an unforgettable 1 night stay in a secluded off-grid cabin. With no electricity, our evenings will be lit by candlelight, and we’ll stay cosy by the warmth of a crackling wood stove. Embrace the rustic charm of a traditional wood-fired sauna, and for the ultimate winter experience, take an invigorating dip in the frozen lake just steps from the cabin.

Fat Biking

Fat biking offers a unique way to explore Finland’s snowy trails, allowing you to cover more ground and take in the stunning winter scenery. With oversized tires for added grip and stability, these bikes are easy to handle and perfect for snow-covered paths. We’ll spend a full day riding through beautiful forest routes, pausing for a hearty lunch at a secluded wilderness cabin. Whether you’re new to biking or an experienced rider, fat biking is a memorable way to immerse yourself in Finland’s winter landscape.

Meet the Reindeer

We’ll take a special visit to a reindeer farm, where you’ll learn all about these fascinating animals and how they’ve adapted to thrive in the Arctic climate. You’ll even have the chance to feed them, experiencing a unique connection with Finland’s iconic wildlife. Afterward, we’ll gather in a cozy tipi around an open fire, warming up with a cup of hot juice as we take in the peaceful surroundings.

Northern Lights

With seven nights in Finland’s pristine wilderness, we’ll have plenty of chances to catch sight of the northern lights. Each evening, we’ll keep our fingers crossed for clear skies and scan the horizon for this mesmerising display. While we can’t guarantee a sighting, this remote location offers the ideal conditions to witness the auroras dancing across the sky in all their breathtaking beauty.

Saunas and Icebathing

Each night, you’ll have the chance to unwind with the Finnish tradition of sauna—a relaxing ritual deeply rooted in the culture. Feel the warmth of the wood-fired sauna soothe your muscles after a day of winter activities. And for those feeling adventurous, you can take the plunge in a frozen lake just outside. This invigorating combination of heat and ice is the ultimate way to recharge, leaving you refreshed and ready for the next day’s adventures.

Fitness and Experience Level

  • This multi-activity adventure is rated moderate.

While no previous experience with snowshoeing, fat biking, or cross-country skiing is needed, a good level of physical fitness is required to fully enjoy this active experience.

  • Fitness Level: This trip is rated moderate. A good level of fitness is required to fully enjoy the activities, especially given the challenging snow conditions.
Duration: Expect active days of around 5 to 6 hours, including rest breaks. We maintain a relaxed pace with a long lunch break of 1 to 1.5 hours each day. The snow depth, often 60–70 cm, adds to the difficulty of our adventures.
Terrain: The terrain varies, with numerous short up and downhills but no long, steep climbs. We’ll explore diverse routes through dense forests, across frozen lakes, and along ridges.
Distance: We cover between 6 and 11 km daily. Snowshoeing and other activities in deep snow and cold conditions are more challenging than typical hiking or biking.
Consecutive Activity: This experience involves 6 consecutive days of physical activity, which is both demanding and incredibly rewarding!
Required Experience: Prior hiking experience and comfort with similar distances, and the ability to ride a bike are necessary, but no prior snowshoeing, skiing, or fat biking experience is required. There is no need for previous overnight adventure experience.
Sub-Zero Living: For 1 night, we’ll stay in basic wilderness cabins without running water or electricity, relying on log-burning stoves for warmth.
