Stuck between what to do this winter? Craving adventure but can’t choose between hiking, skiing, sledding or simply unwinding in a beautiful arctic hotel? Well, you don’t have to!

We’ve combined the best of all winter activities in a women-only adventure in the Swedish Laplands. From snowshoeing through untouched wilderness and mushing your own dog sled to relaxing with a spa night in eco-friendly luxury, you’ll experience the perfect mix of thrill, calm and cultural immersion. Did we mention the northern lights?

This all-round winter retreat will take us deep into the heart of the Scandinavian North, where we’ll meet you in Umeå. From there, we’ll whisk you away to the remote eco-hotel, where you’ll wake up each day to untamed wilderness and bird sounds and wind down each night with delicious three-course, organic dinners.

Once you’re settled in, it’s straight into the winter action! We’ll kick off things (literally) with a snowshoeing tour of the area, taking you along the frozen Ume River and through historic villages. You’ll learn about how the locals built their life in the snow and see the old mills that sustained the region.

The rest of the days will be filled with snow activities and winter fun. We’ll get in more snowshoeing, backcountry skiing around the river and Granö Island, learn how to dog sled, and drive around in snowmobiles.

We’ll visit a local Sami camp, where you’ll meet a local reindeer herder and share stories over a warm cup of coffee. Around the campfire, you’ll learn how the Sami people live in harmony with nature, embracing all eight seasons of this unique landscape. If you’re feeling like expanding your palate, you’ll have the chance to try salted reindeer meat, a traditional staple for the Sami people that highlights the deep connection to their environment.

Over the 4 days of our retreat you’ll fill up on the full spectrum of winter activities and get up close and personal with the wilderness of the land itself.

You don’t need any prior experience or extreme fitness levels for any of the activities. Just pack the curious spirit we already know you have and keep an open mind. Every day will bring something new to try, with light activities to keep you moving and energised.

Location

The Swedish Lapland stretches across the northernmost parts of Sweden, blanketed in thick snow and home to the indigenous Sami people. The Sami have called this wild land home for thousands of years, and are renowned and perhaps most known for their culture, vibrant art scene and reindeer herding. Herders share a deep connection with their reindeer, which also play a central role in their cuisine. But nothing is wasted and every part of the reindeer is valued, right down to the horns, which are often repurposed into practical tools or breathtaking pieces of artwork.

We’ll be visiting their land with all the respect it deserves, immersing ourselves in their culture and learning from their deep connection and regard for nature.

But don’t think it’s all quiet reflection! When we’re not soaking in Sami traditions or relaxing in the beautiful eco-hotel, we’ll be out in the snow, making the most of every winter adventure we can find.

Activities

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is as easy as walking, except you'll be doing it on snowshoes through the snow-covered wilderness. It’s the perfect entry into winter activities if you want to ease into the sport and no prior experience is required. Snowshoes have been around for over 6,000 years, designed to spread your weight so you don't sink into deep snow. While the principle has remained the same, the heavy material used (like wood and leather) have had a serious upgrade. The snowshoes you’ll be strapping into during this retreat are made of lightweight material that won’t tire you out as you explore.

Snowmobile

Don’t be intimidated by this ride, snowmobiling is surprisingly easier (but just as fun) as it looks! We’ll be riding through wide, snowy landscapes with no obstacles to get in your way, keeping it simple while you get comfortable. Snowmobiles don’t have gears, so it’s easy to pick up. Typically, two Gutsy Girls will share one snowmobile, taking turns driving throughout the 3 hour tour. If you have a driver’s license you’ll be good to go. If you don’t have a license you can still enjoy the ride while your partner handles the driving. It’s pure fun, and perfect for beginners who want a taste of adventure without the stress.

Backcountry Skiing

Backcountry skiing is exactly what it sounds like, exploring untouched, unmarked terrain. So, if your first thought upon arriving in the hotel was, “What’s beyond there?”, this is definitely your kind of adventure. With a nature guide leading the way and all the necessary safety precautions in place, we’ll make this journey relaxing, fun and just the right amount of challenging.

With touring skis on, the sport is easy to pick up, and ‘skins’ can be used on the bottom of your skis to add extra traction on those uphill climbs, making the trip easier on your body.

Dog Sledding

For centuries, people in the Arctic have relied on dog sleds as their main form of transportation, and they’re still used in some parts of the world today. These sleds are pulled by a team of dogs and typically don’t go faster than 20 mph. As you drive the sled, there won’t be much required from you. Experienced trainers and the dogs themselves will do most of the work, making it an easy and enjoyable experience. You’ll get the chance to drive the sled yourself and also ride along as a fellow Gutsy Girl takes the reins.

Spa Night - Sauna, Hot Tub and Ice Bath

It might seem a little strange to think of taking a cold bath in the freezing temperatures of the arctic. But it works wonders for those sore muscles you’ll likely have after a full day out in the snow. The heat from the sauna and the hot tub instantly melts away the tension, followed by a jolt of adrenaline that hits your body in the ice bath. It’s the perfect balance between deep relaxation and an energizing boost, so you’re refreshed and ready to go for the next day.
