Activities

  • Our Ski Touring Holiday is designed for intermediate skiers—those who can confidently make parallel turns on red runs and feel comfortable controlling their speed on varied terrain. You don’t need any prior ski touring experience, but a good level of fitness will help you get the most out of the adventure. Unlike resort skiing, ski touring involves hiking uphill on skis using climbing skins, so stamina and endurance are key. Think of it as an active, rewarding challenge—the perfect way to build strength while exploring breathtaking backcountry terrain.

    • Duration: Expect to be out on the snow for around 6–7 hours each day, balancing skiing, touring, and scenic rest stops.

    • Intensity: This isn’t just about skiing downhill—ski touring requires steady uphill movement, using skins to climb to remote peaks before enjoying incredible descents.

    • Skill Level: You should be confident on red runs, using parallel turns, and comfortable in different snow conditions. Some prior off-piste experience is helpful but not essential.

    • Cold Exposure: Swedish mountain temperatures can drop below freezing, so layering is key. Activity will keep you warm, but dressing correctly ensures comfort all day long.

    • Consecutive Activity: Ski touring is physically demanding, with several days of movement. Expect some muscle fatigue, but also a huge sense of accomplishment as your endurance builds throughout the week.

If you’re unsure whether this trip is the right fit for your skill level or fitness, just get in touch—we’re happy to chat and help you decide!

  • This trip is designed for skiers who can make parallel turns on red runs and want to experience the freedom of skiing beyond the resort. You don’t need previous ski touring experience - with expert guides leading the way, you’ll finish the week feeling ready to join guided ski touring trips with confidence. If you’re looking for a fun, supportive, and confidence-boosting introduction to ski touring, this is the perfect adventure!

  • Safety is our top priority. Your ski touring experience will be led by highly qualified guides who will ensure a safe, supportive, and enjoyable journey into the backcountry. You’ll be introduced to avalanche awareness and safety protocols, including how to use a transceiver, shovel, and probe. You’ll gain a basic understanding of mountain safety and decision-making, helping you feel more confident when exploring beyond the resort. With a 4:1 skier-to-instructor ratio, you’ll receive plenty of guidance as you learn the essentials. Our expert guides will be there every step of the way to ensure you feel comfortable and supported as you discover the freedom of ski touring.

Gear & Packing

  • We provide all the essential ski touring equipment, so you don’t need to worry about bringing your own. This includes:

    • Touring skis

    • Poles

    • Ski boots

    • Climbing skins

If you have your own ski touring gear, you’re welcome to bring it—just let us know in advance so we can ensure it’s suitable for the conditions.

  • Ski touring in Sweden requires a bit more preparation than your typical downhill skiing trip. You’ll be spending more time navigating varied terrain, so comfort, warmth, and mobility are key. Here’s a breakdown of the essentials to keep you warm, dry, and flexible:

    Base Layer (Next to Skin)

    • Top and Bottom: A moisture-wicking thermal base layer is essential, preferably made from merino wool or synthetic materials. These materials help keep sweat away from your skin, keeping you dry and comfortable. Avoid cotton, as it traps moisture and can leave you cold.

    • Socks: Opt for high-quality ski socks made from merino wool or synthetic blends to keep your feet warm and comfortable throughout the day. Again, steer clear of cotton.

    Mid Layer (Insulation)

    • Fleece or Down Jacket: A fleece or down mid-layer is perfect for insulation. Fleece offers great warmth without bulk, while down or thicker synthetic layers work well for colder days.

    Outer Layer (Weather Protection)

    • Ski Jacket: A waterproof and windproof ski jacket is a must. Choose one with insulation for added warmth or as a shell if you prefer layering flexibility. Look for features like a snow skirt, adjustable hood, and ventilation zippers to help manage your temperature.

    • Ski Trousers / Salopettes: Waterproof and breathable ski trousers (or salopettes) are essential. For colder days, insulated options work well, while shell pants offer more layering flexibility if you’re expecting varied conditions.

    Accessories

    • Goggles: Ensure your goggles have UV protection and an anti-fog coating to keep your vision clear.

    • Neck Gaiter or Buff: These will help protect your neck and face from wind and cold.

    • Gloves or Mittens: Insulated, waterproof gloves or mittens are essential for keeping your hands warm. Mittens tend to be warmer, but gloves give you more dexterity.

    • Beanie or Hat: A hat or beanie to wear under your helmet is a good option, especially for colder conditions.

    Additional Tips

    • Hand Warmers: These small disposable hand warmers are ideal for extra-cold days.

    • Layering Flexibility: Be prepared to adjust your layers as the weather and your activity level change throughout the day. The Swedish mountain conditions can be cold and windy, but layering properly will ensure you stay comfortable as you ski tour through the stunning terrain.

  • Yes! You can find a detailed packing list here.

  • Yes, bring a small daypack (around 25-35L) to carry essentials like water, snacks, and any extra layers you might need. A lightweight dry bag is also a good idea to keep things dry while on the move.

  • We provide all the necessary equipment for ski touring, but you’ll need to bring your own ski goggles and winter walking boots.

Other Questions

  • In Åre, winter temperatures typically range from -10°C to -3°C (14°F to 27°F) during the ski season, with colder nights, especially in January. However, Swedish cold tends to be dry, so it feels less harsh than damp cold. As spring approaches in March, temperatures can warm up a bit, averaging -6°C to 1°C (21°F to 34°F). The wind can make it feel colder, so layering is crucial for staying comfortable on the mountain.
