Looking to take skiing off the beaten track? Our Trillevallen Ski Touring Holiday is the perfect adventure for intermediate skiers ready to swap groomed runs for the freedom of the backcountry. Set in Sweden’s breathtaking Jämtland mountains, this seven-day experience is designed for first-time ski tourers looking to build confidence in a supportive and fun environment. We start with two days on the resort slopes, refining technique and getting comfortable on varied terrain before transitioning into full-day guided ski tours. With expert instructors leading the way, learn how to use skins, move efficiently uphill, and adapt to changing snow conditions—all at a relaxed pace.

Each day brings a new adventure, from gliding through untouched valleys to standing atop quiet ridgelines with nothing but endless snow ahead. With small group sizes, top-quality gear, and cosy alpine lodgings, everything is taken care of - all you have to do is embrace the adventure. By the end of the week, you’ll not only have newfound confidence but the skills to continue your ski touring journey. If you’re looking for a thrilling, supportive, and unforgettable introduction to the world beyond the pistes, this is it!

Location

Trillevallen, a haven just 25km from the lively ski hub of Åre, has been a beloved alpine retreat since the 1930s. Its peaceful setting, surrounded by snowy peaks and ancient forests, feels like stepping into a winter postcard.

While the area offers pistes for every skill level, the real magic lies beyond the marked trails. The pristine backcountry provides endless opportunities for ski touring, from gentle ascents to rewarding descents through untouched powder. As we climb through the silence of a snow-draped forest or stand at the top of an untracked slope, Trillevallen’s wild beauty leaves us breathless in more ways than one.

What is ski touring?

It’s skiing, but with an extra dose of adventure. Instead of relying on lifts, we use climbing skins to move uphill, earning every turn as we carve through untouched snow. It’s a slower, more immersive way to explore the mountains, blending the thrill of skiing with the magic of venturing into remote, pristine landscapes. With no crowds, no queues—just wide-open terrain and the quiet beauty of winter wilderness—ski touring offers a whole new level of freedom on the slopes.

Introduction to Ski Touring

This ski touring adventure is designed for skiers who can confidently make parallel turns on red runs and are ready to swap the familiar for the wild. With expert guides leading us from morning to late afternoon, we’ll leave the resort behind and explore untouched valleys, hidden ridgelines, and pristine peaks—earning every turn in fresh, untracked snow. Along the way, we’ll master ski touring gear, from climbing skins to bindings, learning how to move efficiently uphill and transition smoothly for the thrill of the descent. Off-piste skiing will become second nature as we adapt to changing snow conditions, refining our technique and building the confidence to take on more challenging terrain.

Each day is a fresh adventure, balancing skill-building with the sheer joy of discovery. Our guides will teach us the essentials of route planning and mountain movement, helping us read the landscape and make smart, safe decisions in the backcountry. Small group sizes mean plenty of personalised coaching, whether it’s improving turns, adjusting pace, or just getting comfortable in the wild. By the week’s end, we won’t just be skiing—we’ll be ski touring, ready to explore beyond the beaten track with confidence and a hunger for more.

Safety

Ski touring is all about freedom—but safety comes first. Our trips are led by highly qualified guides who ensure a safe, supportive, and enjoyable experience in the backcountry. With a 4:1 skier-to-instructor ratio, you’ll receive plenty of personal guidance while building your skills.

Throughout the week, you’ll be introduced to avalanche awareness and essential safety protocols, including how to use a transceiver, shovel, and probe. While this isn’t an intensive avalanche course, you’ll gain a solid understanding of mountain safety and decision-making, helping you feel more confident when exploring beyond the resort. Our expert guides will be with you every step of the way, creating a relaxed yet responsible environment where you can learn, progress, and enjoy the adventure with total peace of mind.

Top Quality Gear Included

All ski touring equipment is included, so there’s no need to bring your own. You’ll be provided with:

Touring skis, boots & poles – specifically designed for both uphill travel and downhill performance.

Climbing skins – essential for grip on the ascent.

Avalanche safety gear – including a transceiver, shovel, and probe.

Your guides will walk you through everything, from adjusting bindings to transitioning between ascent and descent. If you have your own kit and prefer to use it, just let us know in advance so we can make sure it’s suitable for the conditions.

Activities

Night Skiing

Feel the magic of night skiing as we carve through floodlit trails beneath the sparkling sky. There’s a unique thrill to the stillness of the night, the crisp air heightening every turn. Afterwards, warm up at a mountain bar with a cosy drink in hand, swapping stories of the day’s escapades with fellow solo travellers.

Sauna

After a full day of ski touring, retreat to the lodge and indulge in a nightly Nordic tradition. The sauna is ours to enjoy—a quiet space to soothe tired muscles and let the warmth seep in as the chill of the day fades. This ultimate reset leaves us ready to take on whatever the next day has in store.

Twilight Sledge Adventure

Evenings in Trillevallen hold their own kind of magic. Climb into a snowmobile-drawn sledge and let the night whisk us away on a twilight journey. Glide through starlit landscapes to a mountaintop hideaway where a crackling fire, hot drinks, and the vast, glittering sky await in this unforgettable way to immerse yourself in the winter wonderland.

Fitness and Experience Level

  • This trip is rated moderate.

Our Ski Touring Holiday is designed for intermediate skiers—those who can confidently make parallel turns on red runs and feel comfortable controlling their speed on varied terrain. You don’t need any prior ski touring experience, but a good level of fitness will help you get the most out of the adventure. Unlike resort skiing, ski touring involves hiking uphill on skis using climbing skins, so stamina and endurance are key. Think of it as an active, rewarding challenge—the perfect way to build strength while exploring breathtaking backcountry terrain.

  • Duration: Expect to be out on the snow for around 6–7 hours each day, balancing skiing, touring, and scenic rest stops.

Intensity: This isn’t just about skiing downhill—ski touring requires steady uphill movement, using skins to climb to remote peaks before enjoying incredible descents.

Skill Level: You should be confident on red runs, using parallel turns, and comfortable in different snow conditions. Some prior off-piste experience is helpful but not essential.

Cold Exposure: Swedish mountain temperatures can drop below freezing, so layering is key. Activity will keep you warm, but dressing correctly ensures comfort all day long.

Consecutive Activity: Ski touring is physically demanding, with several days of movement. Expect some muscle fatigue, but also a huge sense of accomplishment as your endurance builds throughout the week.

If you’re unsure whether this trip is the right fit for your skill level or fitness, just get in touch—we’re happy to chat and help you decide!
