Fly into Akureyri, Iceland.
Leave the crowds behind and embrace the winter magic of North Iceland with our 4-day active winter adventure holiday. Engage in a myriad of activities for a one-of-a-kind winter holiday - including two days of cross-country skiing. Ideal for beginners or those wanting to refine their skills, this trip is designed to be the perfect introduction to winter sports. Expert guides will be by our side to help us gain confidence on the trails while surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery Iceland has to offer. It’s the perfect introduction to cross-country skiing, but there’s so much more—whale watching, horse riding, and a chance to truly soak up Iceland’s unspoiled beauty.
With all the details covered—including guiding, equipment, delicious food, top quality accommodation and more— there is freedom to focus on the experience, making for an unforgettable way to embrace the Nordic spirit.
Location
Nestled on the Troll Peninsula, close to Akureyri and Siglufjörður, our enchanting accommodation offers cosy comfort with sweeping views of Iceland’s rugged landscapes. It’s the perfect spot to relax after a day of adventure and connect with other adventurers, with the beauty of North Iceland right on our doorstep. The location is steeped in skiing heritage; in the Fljót Valley, cross-country skiing was once essential for locals snowed in during long winters, and the country’s first ski competition was held here in 1905. It’s fitting, then, to be learning or refining skills in a place where skiing is part of the community’s very fabric.
Learn to Cross Country Ski
Over two days, be introduced to the art of cross-country skiing in an environment that’s as welcoming as it is beautiful. Each morning, skilled instructors will walk us through the basics, ensuring comfort and confidence on the snow. After a hearty lunch, the afternoon is for practicing what we learned, with expert support always close by.
Cross-country skiing is a low-impact, full-body workout that’s easy to learn, energising, and surprisingly fun—even for complete beginners. It’s a perfect mix of movement, adventure, and exploring the great outdoors. With its quick learning curve, go from wobbly first steps to gliding through snowy landscapes in just four days. Cross-country skiing takes us into the quiet beauty of nature, with enough downhill sections to keep things exciting.
With equipment hire, expert tuition, and a supportive crew, this is a winter escape made for adventure and connection. Ready to give it a go? Let’s hit the ground gliding!
Icelandic Horses
Spend three hours with the iconic Icelandic horses, known for their hardy nature and deep connection with the land. Under the guidance of local farmers, enjoy a riding lesson and explore scenic trails through the countryside. The Icelandic horses’ unique gait and calm temperament make this a fun and fascinating experience.
Whale Watching
Immerse in a thrilling three-hour whale-watching tour from Akureyri. Sail through Eyjafjord and have the chance to spot humpback whales, as well as minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, and more. An expert marine biologist will share fascinating insights into these majestic creatures as we enjoy the stunning fjord views.
Spa
Unwind with a relaxing visit to the Forest Lagoon Spa. Set in the Vaðlaskógur forest, this tranquil spot offers warm pools, a Finnish dry sauna, and a cold plunge for the ultimate relaxation, all with views over Eyjafjörður.
Thermal Pool
Take a dip in the Barðslaug thermal pool, a peaceful spot just a short distance from the lodge. With a hot tub, sauna, and flotation session, it’s an idyllic way to relax and enjoy the quiet beauty of the Icelandic countryside.
Snowshoeing
Explore the Héðinsfjörður valley on a two-hour snowshoeing trek. Walk in the footsteps of Iceland’s past while hearing stories of the region’s resilient communities and their history. Snowshoeing is a relaxed, low-impact activity that’s perfect for everyone, paired with stunning landscapes leaving us in awe.
Northern Lights
The Northern Lights are nature’s most magical light show, and there’s nothing quite like catching their glow. On this holiday, we’ll be keeping our eyes to the sky each evening, ready to spot those shimmering greens and purples dancing across the Nordic night.
Fitness and Experience Level
-
This trip is rated moderate.
It’s perfect for beginners, with no previous ski or winter sport experience, however you’ll need a good level of fitness to get the most from this experience.
-
Downhill & Speed: Expect gentle slopes, they aren't very steep, but you will pick up speed. If past downhill skiing experiences left you apprehensive, this sport might not be for you.
Gliding Motion: Cross country skiing is all about the glide, you’ll be aiming to generate speed and momentum! If sliding isn't your thing, this sport might not be for you.
Falling: You’ll likely to take a few tumbles when learning to ski, though these falls are generally softer than in alpine skiing, you’ll need to be comfortable with the idea of falling!
Intensity: Cross country skiing often feels like "running with skis on" long flat sections uphill climbs can be physically demanding, so you do need a good level of fitness.
Duration: Daily, you'll be active for 6-7 hours, split into 2-3 hour sessions or occasionally full-day tours.
Distance: We'll cover between 8km to 1km daily. Consider if you can comfortably walk these distances and on consecutive days.
Consecutive Activity: This trip involves several days of back to back activity, which can be tiring.
Comparison with Alpine Skiing:
Cross country and alpine skiing are very different sports. Any prior ski experience can help, but foundational training for cross country is essential. Even experienced alpine skiers start as beginners here!
