Activities

  • This cross-country ski trip is perfect for beginners! Our friendly guides will be with you every step of the way, offering tips, tricks, and plenty of encouragement to get you gliding along in no time. It’s fine if you have no prior experience in cross-country skiing. All you need is a sense of adventure and a willingness to give it a go.

  • Cross-country skiing is an excellent choice if you’re keen to try something new, enjoy active adventures, and don’t mind a bit of a challenge. It’s beginner-friendly, so no prior ski or winter sports experience is needed, but a decent level of fitness will make the experience much more enjoyable.

The beauty of cross-country skiing lies in its steady pace, scenic routes, and the joy of learning at your own speed. It’s perfect for those who like a mix of physical activity and quiet moments in nature. That said, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s perfectly okay! If you’re up for stepping outside your comfort zone, we’re here to support you with fun, welcoming environments designed to make the experience rewarding and encouraging.

  • Boosting your cardiovascular fitness is a brilliant way to build up endurance and stamina for cross-country skiing. A brisk walk where you’re just a little out of breath does the trick nicely—or, if you fancy upping the ante, try running, cycling, or any other high-intensity activity that gets your heart pumping.

Strength, core stability, and balance are also key players in prepping for the slopes. Balance is especially important when transferring your weight smoothly from one ski to the other. Since you’ll be gliding along on one ski at a time, it’s worth practising standing on one leg—perfect excuse to make teeth brushing a multitasking moment!

To take it further, activities like Pilates, yoga, or even dancing are fantastic for improving balance in a fun and gradual way. Plus, they’ll leave you feeling strong, centred, and ready to glide through those snowy trails like a pro.

  • Not at all! This trip is designed specifically with beginners in mind, so no prior horse riding experience is necessary. Our friendly guides will teach you everything you need to know, from mounting a horse to feeling confident in the saddle. They’ll support you every step of the way. You’ll be in safe hands even if you’ve never been near a stable before and/or are curious to give it a go.

  • Absolutely! While this trip is ideal for beginners, it’s also a wonderful fit for those with some prior riding experience. Our guides can tailor the lessons to match your skill level, helping you build confidence, refine your technique, or simply enjoy time in the saddle. That said, if you’re an experienced rider looking for more advanced challenges, this trip might not be the perfect match.

  • You don’t need prior experience in cross-country skiing, but a reasonable level of fitness is recommended to get the most from this trip. We will be cross-country skiing and trying out various other activities such as snow-shoeing and Icelandic horse riding over the course of the holiday, so it’s important to realistically assess your fitness level.

Horse riding isn’t overly strenuous, but it does require a good level of fitness to truly enjoy the experience. If you have any specific concerns, such as an existing condition that might make falling off a horse more problematic, please do get in touch—we’re here to help. And if you’re over 90kg, let us know, and we’ll liaise with the stables to check if we can accommodate you.

Gear & Packing

  • Stay warm, but not too warm:

    • You’ll generate heat while skiing, but cool down quickly at rest stops.

    • Avoid overdressing—too many layers will make you sweaty, and you’ll feel cold and damp when you stop.

    Ditch the downhill ski gear:

    • Cross-country skiing doesn’t require heavy, padded clothing like downhill skiing.

    • Focus on lightweight, breathable, and flexible layers.

    What to wear:

    • Base layer: Wool or synthetic materials to wick away moisture.

    • Outer layer: Windproof, breathable waterproof jacket (ideally with a hood).

    • Insulated layer: Pack a warm jacket for rest stops.

    • Bottoms: Fitted, windproof, water-repellent soft-shell trousers or leggings.

    Avoid cotton:

    • It gets wet, stays cold, and dries slowly.

    Essential extras:

    • Warm socks.

    • Waterproof, insulated gloves.

    • A buff and a hat.

    • Sunglasses and sunscreen to protect from the sun and glare.

Be prepared: These layers and accessories will keep you comfortable, whether you’re gliding through snow or taking in the winter wonderland at a leisurely stop.

  • Yes! You can find a detailed packing list here.

  • Absolutely, you’ll want to bring a daypack with plenty of room for those extra layers you’ll be peeling off as you warm up. A backpack around 25 litres should do the trick.

Pop a warm, insulated jacket in there for rest stops—it’ll keep the chill away when you’re not moving. And don’t forget a spare pair of gloves because, let’s face it, wet gloves are a proper mood-ruiner.

Leave a bit of extra space in your bag before you set off—you’ll likely need it for stashing layers as you heat up on the trail.

Top tip: pack a couple of lightweight dry bags to keep everything inside your backpack dry and cosy. Wet kit = no fun!

  • We provide all the necessary equipment for cross-country skiing. If you have personal gear you prefer to use, feel free to bring it along.

  • For Cross-Country Skiing in Iceland

Specialised Cross-Country Ski Boots: We provide these!

Wool or Thermal Socks: Layer up with a pair of warm, moisture-wicking socks—wool is your best mate here. Avoid cotton; it gets damp and chilly.

Gaiters (Optional): If you’re heading into deep snow, gaiters can stop the white stuff from sneaking into your boots.

    For Snowshoeing in Iceland

Sturdy Hiking Boots: Waterproof, insulated, and with good ankle support. You’ll want boots that can handle wet snow and keep your feet dry while offering solid grip.

Wool or Thermal Socks: Again, wool wins the day—warmth and dryness are key. Pack an extra pair in case your feet get damp.

Snow Gaiters: Highly recommended for snowshoeing. They’ll stop snow from creeping into your boots and keep your legs dry.

    For Icelandic Horse Riding

Riding Boots or Sturdy Shoes: Opt for shoes with a small heel to stop your feet from slipping through the stirrups. If you don’t have riding boots, sturdy waterproof hiking boots can do the job.

Warm Socks: Wool or thermal socks are your best bet for keeping your toes cosy during those frosty rides.

Comfortable Layers: While not strictly footwear, remember to dress warmly as you’ll be sitting still more than moving—extra layers around your feet won’t go amiss!

Other

  • Iceland’s skiing season stretches from November to May, with the best conditions typically falling between February and April. During this sweet spot, the snow is ideal, the daylight hours are longer, and the scenery is nothing short of breathtaking. Temperatures in Iceland’s ski season range from -10°C to just above freezing, providing a mix of powdery and packed snow to suit all skiing preferences.

January and February often deliver the freshest snowfall, while March and April bring more daylight and steadier weather, making them perfect for extended adventures. Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable, with occasional rain or milder spells as the season goes on, but well-groomed trails and excellent snow maintenance ensure you’ll still find fantastic conditions.

  • No need to stuff your wallet with cash in Iceland—credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere. That said, it’s handy to carry a small amount of local currency for those occasional personal expenses.

  • There’s no upper age limit for our adventures—our Gutsy Girls community welcomes women from 18 to 70+! We never ask your age, only that you’re ready for a bit of adventure and a lot of fun.

Most of our guests are between 24 and 60, with around 60% in their 30s and 40s. But once we’re out there—cycling over hills, hiking to breathtaking peaks, or paddling through remote waters—age truly becomes irrelevant. It’s all about sharing incredible experiences, laughing together, and building friendships that span generations.

  • Absolutely! We’d love for you to join us solo!

Over 95% of our guests come on their own, and we’re all about helping you connect with like-minded adventurers. It’s a warm, welcoming vibe—come as you are, we can’t wait to meet you and make some amazing memories together!

  • At Gutsy Girls, our top priority is working with guides and instructors who embody our values—passionate, experienced, and dedicated to building women’s confidence in the outdoors. While we aim to have female guides wherever possible, the reality is there are fewer women in the industry, so occasionally, we work with male instructors.

We carefully select those who are patient, friendly, and highly skilled, always keeping track of the feedback from our guests. We’re excited to see the number of female instructors grow as more women take to adventure sports!

  • If the weather doesn’t play ball, we’ll adjust the plan accordingly. Safety is always our top priority, and we’ve got plenty of indoor or alternative activities lined up, just in case. You’re in safe hands!

  • You can find the full itinerary on the Gutsy Girls website. Just a heads-up, though, our itineraries aren’t set in stone. Our guides are experts at making the most of the weather each day, so they may adjust things to ensure we get the best out of the conditions. Please be flexible – they work hard to balance adventure with safety, so we can all have a fantastic time!
