If you’ve already dipped your skis into the world of cross-country skiing and are itching for the next dose of adventure-filled fun, meet us in Sweden!
We’ve learnt that good company makes everything better, whether that’s finally mastering your diagonal stride or taking a few headfirst icy tumbles…
That’s why during this improvers cross country skiing retreat, you and nine other Gutsy Girls, will venture out in the powdery trails of the renowned Bruksvallarna village. Everyday will bring something new, mixing it up with workshops, full-day ski tours and mindless exploration. We’ll even have a whole evening of snowshoeing for a little change of pace.
And yes, you’ll still have time to stretch it all out with some yoga in the evening before a relaxing sauna.
If you have goals to crush you’ll have all the time and space to ask questions and work on your cross-country technique. But don’t worry too much about clocking kilometers or hitting personal bests. This retreat is focused on helping you get that extra practice under your belt while having a brilliant time on the slopes!
Location
There is no place that combines snow, fun and sport quite like Bruksvallarna Village in Sweden. It’s where serious Nordic skiing meets pure beauty and adventure. During the winter over 300 kilometers of trails get covered in a thick snow that even the Swedish National Skiing Team chooses as a training ground. While we probably won’t be racing them anytime soon, we’ll be learning at our own pace in the same wide-open mountain landscapes and inspiring birch forests.
Activities
Cross Country Skiing
Cross country skiing is a fun and light hearted alternative to traditional skiing. It’s a lot like hiking, only you’re doing it on skis! You’ll have to use a gliding motion to take you through snow-covered trails, pushing with both your arms and legs to power yourself forward, in true full body workout fashion. Unlike downhill skiing, it’s all about smooth, steady movement through flat and rolling terrain.
Our favourite part about cross-country skiing is that it allows you to explore off the beaten paths and find remote locations that most people close to the ski resort never get to see. No crowds, no lift lines—just the Gutsy Girls and stunning nordic landscapes all around us.
Snowshoeing
Step away from the skis for a day and embrace a new winter experience with our snowshoeing adventure. This refreshing change of pace introduces you to a different winter sport, guiding you through new and uncharted terrains. As we meander among the snow-draped trees, we'll venture deep into the Swedish wilderness.
Mountain Dinner and Snowcat Ride
Embark on an exhilarating snowcat ski ride to the top of the mountain, where a cosy cabin awaits. Indulge in delicious local cuisine amidst the starry night sky, creating a truly unique and memorable dining adventure.
The snowcat will also serve as our transport for some days skiing, for our more experienced skiers there’s the chance to be towed behind it as it climbs the mountain!
Fitness and Experience Level
This retreat is for anyone who’s already had a go at cross-country skiing. If you’ve never skied before or it’s been a few years since you last hit the snow, our Beginner’s Cross-Country Skiing and Yoga Retreat would be a better place to start.
We’ll kick things off on the easy stuff, with level ground to get us feeling comfortable, but expect plenty of time on your skis throughout the week. Some days we will be focusing on lessons with our instructors to hone in your skills and technique, while others we’ll be out exploring the landscape, covering distances of up to 30 km. And on some days, we’ll do a bit of both with lessons in the morning and touring in the afternoon!
Expect a few tumbles here and there but nothing too dramatic. There'll be plenty of snow around to cushion those falls!
-
This trip is tailored for improvers and intermediate cross country skiers eager to hone their skills, both on and off track. Over the week, we'll delve into cross country skiing techniques, covering distances up to 30 km.
If you've previously embarked on a beginner skiing holiday, this journey offers a seamless transition to challenge yourself further and navigate longer terrains.
More intermediate skiers seeking comprehensive coaching and curated daily tours will also have a great experience on this adventure!
Minimum experience of 3 full days cross country skiing.
Able to snow plough both in and out of the track.
Able to move effectively in and out of the tracks.
Confident in managing speed and direction during downhill skiing.
Comfortable with skiing distances of 15 km to 30 km in a day.
Good to high level of fitness
Important to note: Previous alpine/downhill skiing is not enough to join this trip, you must join a beginner cross country ski trip to learn the technique.
-
Intensity: Cross country skiing often feels like "running with skis on" long flat sections uphill climbs can be physically demanding, so you do need a good level of fitness.
Duration: Daily, you'll be active for 6-7 hours, split into 2-3 hour sessions or occasionally full-day tours.
Distance: We'll cover between 10km to 25km daily. Consider if you can comfortably walk these distances and on consecutive days.
Consecutive Activity: This trip involves several days of back to back activity, which can be tiring.
Comparison with Alpine Skiing: Cross country and alpine skiing are very different sports. Any prior ski experience can help, but foundational training for cross country is essential before booking this trip.
Downhill & Speed: Expect gentle slopes, they aren't very steep, but you will pick up speed. If past downhill skiing experiences left you apprehensive, this sport might not be for you.
-
If you've been with us for the 4 or 7-night sessions, think back to those experiences to see if this trip is right for you.
Movement & Technique: Did you feel you grasped the basics well? Did you start to shift your weight from one foot to the other? Were there times you felt a smooth glide?
Downhill & Speed Control: Were you comfortable picking up speed on descents? Did you feel in control of your speed as you went downhill?
Handling Slopes: Even if your snowplough stop wasn't perfect, were you willing to try steep downhills, knowing there's a risk of falling?
Distance Comfort: How did you feel about the longer distances, up to 20 km? Did those days feel good?
